The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, NERC, has approved 481 Band A areas for the purpose of implementing the new tariff.
Documents obtained from the regulator indicated that the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company, AEDC, emerged the highest with 107. Yola Electricity Distribution Company, YEDC, has 15, apparently the least.
A breakdown indicated that the Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company, IKEDC, has 45, Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company 43.
Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company, 25; Kano Electricity Distribution Company, 43; Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company, 30; Jos Electricity Distribution Company, 64.
Benin Electricity Distribution Company 44; Eko Electricity Distribution Plc, 21 and Enugu Electricity Distribution Company, 44.
Electricity subsidy
Meanwhile, the Federal Government’s subsidies for electricity consumed across the country dropped by N137.07 billion monthly. This is just as it decided to increase tariffs for about two million customers by 230 percent.
The Commission explained that the new increase in electricity for the 1.9 million customers in Band A became necessary following changes in indices used in setting the tariff earlier in the year.
According to NERC, the new tariff is based on an inflation rate of 31.7 percent and a foreign exchange rate of N1,463.3 to a dollar.
It said it expects the energy supply to grow to 5,351GWh.
